San Diego Pest Control - YMCA bike-a-thon raises $33,000

Cycling enthusiasts pedaled away inside the Gary Biszantz Family Gymnasium in Encinitas for the ninth annual Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA Bike-A-Thon.
The Jan. 30 event, which attracted 300 riders and lasted 12 hours, raised more than $33,000.
"The Bike-A-Thon was started by YMCA cycling instructor Robin Missailidis in the hopes of generating more support for the YMCA's annual giving campaign from the local cycling community," said Nick Pince, marketing and membership director.
"The proceeds go to the YMCA's financial assistance program, which gives program scholarships and memberships to youth, families, and seniors."
The all-day spin at the gym fosters a true sense of community, Pince said.
Two riders not in the group teams who completed the 12-hour ride on their own were Joyce Conklin and Mike Pierce.
Nobi Ishibashi, raising $3,000, earned the top money-making performer spot.
"Former YMCA board member Jim Carbaugh rode in memory of his son, Brian Carbaugh," Pince said.
An upbeat George Missailidis served as master of ceremonies and auctioneer.
During the race, cyclists kept up to speed with the live and silent auction items, which consisted of dinner with 1983 Olympian silver medalist Steve Scott, a signed skateboard by Tony Hawk, a George Hincapie jersey, a free Iron Man triathlon entry, and spa and fitness packages.
A fashion show featuring Lulu Lemon and Zoot Sport clothing was showcased and then later sold to the highest bidder.
Members of the Bike-A-Thon committee were Patty Barry, Rachel Challis, Susanne Davis, Wendy Green, Kate Joiner, Laurel Laren, Judy Malings, Gloria Miller, Rachelle Morton, Laura Stuart-Platenberg, and Kristine Svarcase.
Generous sponsors of the event included Submarina, Clark Pest Control, Zoot Sport, and Shoebacca.
"The Bike-A-Thon is an extremely high-energy event," Pince said. "Not only is there a huge amount of energy flowing through the cyclists, but everyone is driven to do their best knowing they are contributing to a good cause."
