Survey responses to common pest sightings

What do you do if you encountered a crawling, or flying pest in your home? A recent article in Pest Management Professional magazine shared people’s most common responses to seeing a pest in their home.
Common responses to pest sightings
When asked what their most common response to a pest sighting was, survey respondents indicated the following:
- 27 percent crushed it
- 22 percent sprayed something at it
- 15 percent asked someone else to kill it
- 11 percent capture it and release it outdoors
- 8 percent threw something at it
- 7 percent called a pest management professional
- 6 percent vacuumed it
The survey also examined the differences between men and women on how they handled pest encounters. With male respondents, 33 percent said they would crush the pest, versus 22 percent of female respondents. On the other hand, women were more likely to ask someone else to kill the pest (25 percent) compared to men (6 percent). Men were also much more likely to spray something at the pest (24 percent) compared to women (19 percent).
The survey results suggest that most customers want to handle it themselves and as swiftly as possible which is understandable. Who hasn’t stepped on a wandering ant or grabbed the fly swatter when a marauding invader shows interest in dinner?
