The Fall Pest Outlook: Rodent Pressure on the Rise

Oct 4, 2024, 14:43 PM by Fred Speer

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) released its bi-annual Bug Barometer, forecasting what Americans can expect from pest populations in their respective regions across the United States this fall and winter based on weather patterns, long-term forecasts and pest biology.

Warmer-than-normal temperatures are anticipated to continue, and experts are anticipating tick and mosquito populations will remain active through the fall season. However, temperature drops will result in a spike in rodent issues at the start of winter.

“When it comes to pests, even the slightest fluctuations in temperature and precipitation can have a significant impact on their populations and activity,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, senior vice president of public affairs at the NPMA. “A warm and wet fall, for example, can allow disease-carrying pests like ticks and mosquitoes to remain active and breeding much longer than we’d typically expect and just a few cold nights can result in a significant uptick in rodent sightings in homes.”

Based on their analysis, NPMA’s Fall and Winter 2024 Bug Barometer is forecasting an increase in pest pressure across the U.S., including California.

“With forecasts calling for a mix of unpredictable conditions across the Western U.S., one pest prediction that homeowners can prepare for is an increase in rodent activity in and around homes this fall as temperatures drop and these pests search for warmth, food, and shelter.”

Fall Pest Proofing Tips

Clark, your neighborly pest, termite and rodent control expert, wants to help homeowners prepare for any potential rodent or other pest incursions into their homes with the following fall pest proofing tips.

Seal Entry Points

  • Inspect your home for gaps, holes, or cracks in walls, doors, windows, and foundations. Even small openings (about 1/4 inch) can be entry points for mice.
  • Use steel wool, caulk, or wire mesh to seal holes around pipes, vents, and utility lines.
  • Install door sweeps and weatherstripping to block gaps under doors.

Eliminate Food Sources

  • Store food properly in airtight containers, including pet food, birdseed, and pantry items.
  • Clean up spills and crumbs immediately in kitchens and dining areas.
  • Take out trash regularly, ensuring garbage bins have tight-fitting lids.
  • Avoid leaving pet food outside overnight.

Maintain Landscaping

  • Trim trees and shrubs away from the house, as overhanging branches can provide easy access to roofs.
  • Keep grass and weeds trimmed around the property to reduce hiding spots for rodents.
  • Avoid dense mulch layers near the foundation, as they can attract rodents.

Remove Clutter and Debris

  • Keep your yard clean, removing any piles of leaves, wood, or other debris where rodents could nest.
  • Store firewood and materials at least 20 feet away from the house and 18 inches off the ground.

Secure Crawl Spaces and Attics

  • Install screens or covers on vents, chimneys, and other openings leading to crawl spaces or attics.
  • Check insulation and walls in attics for signs of nesting or chewing and take steps to block access.

Fix Water Leaks

  • Repair leaks and plumbing issues, as rodents are attracted to sources of water.
  • Remove standing water from gutters, birdbaths, or other areas around your home.
